Perhaps for as long as I can remember I've wanted to be an author.
I know that it's a common dream that an untold number of people the world over must share, but I wonder how many ever make it more than a dream? I only began writing with any kind of dedication around 2004/5. Now, I say 'dedication', but that kind of suggests I've become highly productive, churning out tales at a tremendous rate. Hardly! I may have written well over a millon words, but most were transitory. I have only completed a very small number of projects.

Really, of course, like most would-be writers, my dream is to become published; not by the benefit of having sufficient private money (which I haven't!) to pay for the privillige of publication, but by the virtue of my talent being deemed worthy. Unfortunately, thus far that talent has been either (a) overlooked, or (b) deemed unworthy by any number of literary agents. I console myself that I am not alone: this is the way of things for millions (quite probably) of fellow scribblers the world over. I further console myself by saying that agents and publishers are a limited resource, who must forever look to the main chance. After all, they are in business to make money, for themselves or their backers and shareholders, just like any other enterprise. This means that 'good' writing (a rather vague and arbitrary term, I admit) is not their most important criteria. What they are looking for is 'saleability'. You might consider the works of Dickens to be well-written - I do - but you don't see many copies of Great Expectations on the shelves of popularist bookstores, do you? Certainly not in the front window. Which is not to say that I class my ability in the same league! I have no delusion about any skill that I may have. On the other hand, I have been told by a few that there are a lot of books on the shelves alongside which my own work would not look out of place.

In addition, there's the genre to consider. There has been a demand in recent years for fact-based books, biographies (auto- or semi-, or even - dare I say it? - fanciful), or tales that are historically set (the latter fuelled, I suspect, by the plethora of costume and period dramas that have been broadcast on television over recent years, many of which have been, indeed, fine productions.) Mystery and detective novels are also quite popular, and the Romance has always had a large and loyal following. However, if you are a writer whose particular sphere of interest happens to be science-fiction or fantasy, for example, then you may find yourself out of favour with the buying public. At least, if you are an unknown author, trying to get yourself noticed. Of course, all fads are transient, even if they are sometimes quite long-lasting, and doubtless the fashion for reading one type of book will move to another. If I'm lucky, it might even happen in my lifetime!

So anyway, this website is a window on my imagination. It's where I'll display my short stories, for the internet world to read at leisure if it's so inclined. I don't know how many short stories I'll write - at the moment it's not so many - but I'll certainly post a selection of them here when they arrive. I don't expect that everything I write will please everybody - nobody in the history of writing has ever acheived that! It is my hope, though, that some readers will enjoy some of my tales. I welcome feedback in two forms:

  1. By vote. Each story is accompanied by a voting option, where you can give your opinion by selecting from a set of radio button options.

  2. By comment. There is a moderated feedback form where you can pass critique. Note that it is a 'moderated' facility, which means that I will review all feedback before it appears on the site. I will not simply eliminate negative criticism - such views are valid, after all - however, I will prevent the appearance of abusive or criminal content, or blatant advertising.

My friend, casual first-time visitor, or returning regular, my work is here for you to read, hopefully enjoy, and maybe comment on. To view the available stories you simply click on a tab for the specific genre you are interested in (the PRISM tab is a slightly special one, the explanation for which you can read when you visit it.) Each tab will display a list of links for any tales that are available in that category. Simply click on the link and read. I hope you will enjoy!

A Note on the Downloads

The stories you can download are enclosed in an executable wrapper, an eBook, using an application supplied by Ebook Maestro. Each eBook has been compiled and uploaded to my website by me.

To access the story inside each eBook, just double-click the download, wait a few moments for the mini-application to initialise, and the reading window to appear, then read-away. You can navigate the story using the links in the left-hand pane.

Please note: at the point that I upload each eBook to my website, I promise there is no virus or other infection present.
