Science Fiction (and Fantasy) |
||
| Science Fiction. Fantasy.
The two terms are surely exclusive, but... there is a wide area
where the two genres overlap, and sometimes it's not easy to
distinguish between the two. Take the books of Ursula LeGuin, for
instance, her Dragons of Pern series. Or perhaps, in
a wholly different vein, the Discworld stories of Terry Pratchett.
Then there some of the works of Rice Burroughs, or John Wyndham.
All have, I think, at least a degree of presence in the camps of both SF and Fantasy
- after all, any work of fiction is fantasy by simple
definition. What about the Horror or Supernatural genres? Was
Frankenstein's Monster wholly a work of science fiction? And in
the wider sphere, were the Alien movies just science fiction?
They (particularly the first one!) had an impressive 'chill'
factor, as well as a reasonable amount of horrific content, so I
would hesitate to say they belonged solely in the realm of science
fiction, though undoubtedly their roots are well grounded there.
Anyway, that preamble is by way of an explanation for the stories that I've included here. Some will certainly fall clearly into one camp or the other, while others may in fact be hybrid. I don't think it really matters, to tell the truth. Now, amongst the offers here is one that is related to PRISM, that is to say it is based on the PRISM environment and mythology. I've included it here, rather than on the PRISM tab, becasue it is short, and whole. If you like it, take a look at the PRISM tab itself, and get a broader idea of the background for the PRISM 'shorty'. If you like it even more, visit http://www.lulu.com/nigeledwards where PRISM - Exiles and other tales can be purchased in paperback form or eBook. In the meantime, read these offerings, and let me know what you think. |

| I had just completed the first full
draft of PRISM - Exiles early in 2007, and after a few weeks rest I got the bug to
write again. For some reason I couldn't face beginning the rewrite, so I looked around for
another topic. I fancied trying my hand
at writing something with a trans-Atlantic flavour. Not having spent any
particular length of time in the USA I wasn't sure how it would turn out,
but I've seen plenty of American films, and series on the television, so I
figured I'd give it a go. The Cookie Tin is not the first story I
ever wrote, but is one of the first I've felt confident enough to ask others to
read.
The Cookie Tin is a science-fiction short story in around 14,000 words. It is the tale of Shelby, a woman working in the backroom of an American newspaper, who receives an odd gift from a complete stranger. It's a story of emotions, and what it might be like if they weren't hidden away... Written in 2007 |

The Cookie Tin I was drawn once more to the world of the Prism. Still I
could not settle to the rewrite of Exiles, or PRISM - Natives (the
planned sequel to Exiles), so I embarked
on a short story instead, but set within the Prisms' confines. The Rescue is a science-fiction/fantasy
short story in around 15,000 words. It tells the tale of Tīro, an agent of the
underground rebellion, and Mestefīna, a woman with a mission to rescue her
father...
